My first job was up in the poor neighborhood that I work in. I was met outside by a pregnant hispanic woman who showed me in. She had one of her kids do the translating for us. She then said she needed to take the kids to school. The house was divided into two units. Her sister was in the other unit. It turned out that there was no line for this unit. So I had to run a new line. At this point I noticed two other techs hanging out down the road just chatting. They must have been there about an hour. Eventually as I was about to finish the job they came over to help because they thought I was having a problem. It turned out they were on leakage duty. Which means they drive around and find points where our cable signal is leaking into the air and fix it. Apparently I inadvertently fixed one of their problems. To do this install I had to go into the crawl-space, which wreaked of piss. Like someone's been using it as a bathroom.
The next job was in the same neighborhood, but a little to the west. The guy looked like I just woke him up. The place was in disarray. I was there to install phone only, but I could tell he was currently getting video services. The previous resident must not have been disconnected. I made sure he knew he was only getting phone. I went up to the pole and put the filter up there that blocks everything but phone and after I came down and put up my ladder the guy came out and said his TV was all screwed up now. I tried to explain to him that he was getting TV for free, but he was not signed up for TV currently. So he asked me to set him up with basic, which I did.
Afterwards I went back to an install I was at last week. The one with the little dog that kept trying to bite me. I was back to get the Internet working. That damn dog was at it again. When I finally got it working the woman wanted me to set up her DVD and VCR as well. Then I had to explain how to work everything. She just wasn't getting it though. I was getting obviously frustrated with her. I get really annoyed when I have to explain things over and over.
My last job was at a very nice house. The people here have done a lot of work on the place. There was an old woman here who said she was holding down the fort for her daughter. There was a child sleeping so everything was said with a hushed tone. They had a dog that was wearing a cone and had bandages on all four feet. I asked if the dog had surgery, but the woman said their was a block party last week and the kids kept playing catch with him on the asphalt and ended up wearing down the pads on all four feet. I took a look around and figured out a really easy way to do the install. I was just there to hook up phone and they already had Internet and TV. The job took me an hour, but they gave me all afternoon to do it. So once I was done I went and got a new driver side mirror. Then I went home.
